"This arresting portrait is thought to be a contemporary artist's workshop copy of one painted by the Venetian artist Titian (1487 - 1576) whose whereabouts is unknown. It was done for Federico Gonzaga around 1538 and subsequently disappeared around the time that many other paintings were bought by Charles V. At least three other similar portraits, and possibly copies, were in circulation, but this is the only copy known to have survived. It was shown in the 2002 blockbuster Gonzaga exhibition in Mantova, and can usually be seen in Vienna in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Schloss Ambras.

Despite its appearance, neither Titian nor any other known western artist never actually came face to face with Suleiman, and it must have been a bit of a challenge finding images to work from."
