...This celebrated story is told with variations by many ancient authors,<10> and a similar anecdote has been told of Hippocrates,<11> Galen,<12> Avicenna, and (if the names be not fictitious) Panacius<13> and Acestinus.<14> If this is the anecdote referred to by Pliny,<15> as is probably the case, Erasistratus is said to have received one hundred talents for being the means of restoring the prince to health, which would amount to one of the largest medical fees upon record.
Very little more is known of the personal history of Erasistratus: he lived for some time at Alexandria, which was at that time beginning to be a celebrated medical school,...

http://www.sacred-texts.com/cla/luc/tsg/tsg07.htm The Syrian Goddess, by Lucian, tr. by Herbert A. Strong and John Garstang, <1913>
17. These are the legends concerning the founders of the temple... the present one they say was the work of Stratonice, the wife of the king of the Assyrians.35 This I take to be the Stratonice of whom her stepson was enamoured, and the skill of a doctor detected the intrigue: ...
23. ...and what the Greeks allege about their Stheneboea and about Phaedra the Cnosian the Assyrians tell in the same way about Stratonice. For my part I do not believe that either Stheneboea nor Phaedra acted thus if Phaedra really loved Hippolytus. However, let the old version remain for what it is worth.
58:35 The stories of Stratonice and of Combabus which follow, §§ 17-25, are not of special interest. They seem to include garbled local details from the legends of Istar and Tammuz, and to be introduced as the fulfilment of Lucian's wish to explain the origin of emasculation and other customs among the Galli (see end of § 15). None the less, Stratonice is a recognisable historical character, wife of Seleucus Nicator (of Antioch), at the close of the third century B.C., and Movers (i., p. 687) has urged the identity of Combabus with the god of Hierapolis. On the resemblance of the name to the Elamite Khumbaba, cf. Ungnad, D. Gilgamesch-Epos, p. 77, n...

http://www.well.com/user/aquarius/ganschinietz.htm KOMBABUS
A typical cultic legend : Hera commands Stratonike in a dream to establish a temple at Hierapolis, or else she will suffer misfortune. Indeed, Stratonike falls ill, but soon recovers when she vows to build the temple.
Thus Stratonike is sent to Hierapolis with treasure and soldiers to build the temple. In spite of his protests, Combabus is entrusted with the supreme command; fears Stratonike due to evil rumors. He withdraws for a few days and sadly decides to remove the occasion for evil: he castrates himself (this motif returns again in the Attis myth in Prudentius, Perist. X 197 per sectum dedecus ab impudicae tutus amplexu deae) and places his privates in a small container with myrrh and honey and other spices, seals it and gives it ceremoniously to the king, who has it marked with his seal and held in safekeeping. For three years Combabus worked on the temple. And in fact, Stratonike fell in love with Combabus, probably under the power of the vengeful Hera. Finally, she could control her passion no longer and she fell into the madness of love. In order to be able to declare herself to Combabus, she got herself drunk, threw herself at his feet and threatened suicide. Then Combabus admitted the truth to her; the madness stopped, but not the love, and they lived in an intimate platonic love relationship. The Galli imitate this relationship: Galli and women are in love with one another and view this relationship as something holy.
Combabus was denounced and recalled; in one version Stratonike is supposed to have denounced him, like Potiphar's wife did Joseph. He was charged with betrayal of trust and ungodliness, and sentenced to death. Combabus said nothing; but as he was being led to his death, he asked for the jewel that he had given to the king for safekeeping. At this point everything is clarified, and the king exonerates him completely. The king has a statue of him erected in the soon completed sanctuary: the author saw there a statue of the Rhodian Hermocles, a figure of a woman in men's clothing.

In this article I present the section that concerns Potiphar’s wife and her passion to Joseph. <1> ...
A Comparative Mythical Template: Queen Stratonice and Combabus. Lucian’s De Dea Syria offers a narrative the characteristics of which seem relevant to the biblical story of Joseph, Potiphar and his wife. <7>
Queen Stratonice rebuilt the temple of Hierapolis in which served Galli, emasculated priests whose emasculation was offered for female deities. <8> On going on her journey to rebuild the Temple, her husband sent a young aide called, Combabus, to assist with the rebuilding of the temple at Hierapolis. Before leaving for Hieroapolis with the queen, Combabus emasculated himself and left his genitals in a box at the king’s palace. They built the temple. Queen Stratonice then fell in love with Combabus and tried to seduce him. He resisted and told her what he had done. However, she persisted; a kind of love that is still conducted in the temple between Galli and women at Hierapolis, according to Lucian’s De Dea Syria. <9> On returning home, the queen falsely accused Combabus before the king of seduction. Combabus was arrested and sentenced to death. On producing the box with his severed genitals, Combabus was pardoned and greatly rewarded for his loyalty.
The cultic emasculation of the Galli, is seen in the figure of Combabus. This figure seems related to Potiphar’s ‘underlined’ emasculation, and at the same time to Joseph’s sexual abstention on account of devotion to both his master and his religion. In these cases, cultic emasculation as well as sexual abstention are offered as tokens of loyalty to higher patrons; that includes earthly ones, metaphysical ones, namely female and masculine deities.
<6> Gen. 39:9, the Hebrew Bible describes Potiphar as a saris which may mean both an officer and a eunuch.
<7> Stephen Benko, The Virgin Goddess, Studies in The Pagan and Christian Roots of Marialogy, Brill, Leiden, New York, Kцln, 1993, p.53-55
<8> As an additional theme Stratonice’s step son falls in love with his step mother Queen Stratonice.
<9> Stephen Benko, (on De Dea Syria, chapters 21,22), 1993, p. 55.
<37> Robert Graves and Raphael Patai in The Hebrew Myth, 1963, mention a number of variants on stories of incest in which the male lover repels an incestuous woman: the earliest can be seen in the Egyptian ‘Tale of Two Brothers’. Greek myths bring the tales of Biadice and Phrixus (originally Cannaanite), Anteia and Bellerophon, and Phaedra and Hippolytus. However, the story about the eunuch Cambabus that I favoured however (see above), is edited in Benko’s book The Virgin Goddess, without the analogy to Potiphar’s wife, Stephen Benko, The Virgin Goddess, Brill, Leiden, New York, Koln, 1993, pp 71-72.
