Вероятно, слово «understand» - нижестоящий, ср. «subhuman» - «Untermensch» - недочеловек; немецкое слово «Mensch» буквально означает человек.

Вероятно, «Mensch» = меньший, вспомните, хотя бы обращение «человек» к людям, ниже по положению. Ниже (Unter) + «Mensch».

Надо полагать, что коренное население стояло ниже по положению, не зря же немцы и голландцы - Diets, Duits (Deutsch), т.е. дети, детище, детишки, равно, как и «Teuton» = дитя + «on» - юс, «д» - «t».

«Педо – люди»? Да, а как же «педагогика»? Педагогика (др.-греч. παιδαγωγική – искусство воспитания; от παῖς – ребёнок → παιδος – подросток + ἄγω – веду). Как шустро господа этимологи забывают основы. Подведу, подводить, под + го (гон, конь), т.е. подгонять, подгоню; пойду, подрос. Так же – пащенок, пацан; греч. παῖς вряд-ли связано с παιδος

Ниже – nether – unter (under) + стоять (ставить) – stt (ср. «staff» - персонал) + «an» - юс; – stnd – stand = “understand”; соответственно языка, на котором говорили господа, эти люди не знали, но приказы – понимали. А уж, какой там был язык для господ и простонародья, о том история умалчивает. По согласию предполагается, что французский. Прямо, как в романовской России.

Насчет «mis -», см. «misbehave». Кстати, вполне вероятно, что два раза «ниже», истоки со временем забываются.
