auction – аукцион

auction (n.) (продажа с повышением ставки, из лат. «auctionem» - увеличение продаж, публичные торги; существительное, обозначающее действие из причастия прошедшего времени, от корневой основы «augere» - увеличивать, возрастать, из PIE корня *aug – с тем же значением.
"a sale by increase of bids," 1590s, from Latin auctionem (nominative auctio) "an increasing sale, auction, public sale," noun of action from past participle stem of augere "to increase," from PIE root *aug- "to increase" (see augment). In northern England and Scotland, called a roup. In the U.S., something is sold at auction; in England, by auction.

auction (v.)
1807, from auction (n.). Related: Auctioned; auctioning.
augment (v.) (увеличивать, прибавлять; из старофранцузского «augmenter»; из лат. «augmentare» - увеличивать, прибавлять; из лат. «augmentum» - с тем же значением. Из «augere» - увеличивать, делать большим.
c.1400, from Old French augmenter "increase, enhance" (14c.), from Late Latin augmentare "to increase," from Latin augmentum "an increase," from augere "to increase, make big, enlarge, enrich," from PIE root *aug- "to increase" (cf. Sanskrit ojas- "strength;" Lithuanian augu "to grow," aukstas "high, of superior rank;" Greek auxo "increase," auxein "to increase;" Gothic aukan "to grow, increase;" Old English eacien "to increase"). Related: Augmented; augmenting. As a noun from early 15c.

Странно, что не привели слово «age» - возраст. Он точно из этого куста.

Вот все хорошо, только этимологи забыли одно важное слово «auger» - шнек, бур, сверло. И, странным образом, это слово в аккурат = латинскому «augere». Конечно, профессиональный этимолог, типа Зализняка, немедленно воскликнет – «Это совпадение»! Простите, я в совпадения не верю.

Читаем с словаре 1888:
AUGERE
It means, literally, a nave-piercer, being used for boring
the hole in the centre of a wheel for the axle to pass through. A.S.
nafu, nafa, the nave of a wheel (see Nave) ; and gar, a piercer, that
which gores (see Gore).+O. H. G. napager, an auger; from O. H. G.
napa, nave, and ger, a spear-point, ^f The Du. avegaar, an auger, has
lost the initial like English, being derived from naaf, the nave of a
wheel, and an old word gaar, a spear-point (A. S. gar), now obsolete
except in as far as it is represented by geer, a gore. But the Du. also
has the word naafboor, an auger, in which the n is preserved, the
derivation being from naaf, nave, and boren, to bore.

1828:
AGO, I lead, drive, drive about; я веду, лидирую. Т.е. «иду» (го)

AGO, I do, act. Fr. Αγω – я делаю, совершаю. Аналогично с предыдущим.

AGON, a contest. Αγών – соревнование (гон, гонка). Кстати и «огонь».

AUCTIO, an auction. Fr. augeo, augtum, auctum. Цепочка следующая – го (гон) – «н» - «u» (перевертыш и перестановка) – «гн» - «gn» - «ug», замена «н» - «m» - тяну. Гнать + тянуть (гоню + тяну, т.е. то, что делает любой аукционист).

AUCTOR, one who creates or makes. “Auctor is from “augeo”, “auctum”; and properly means one, who (auget) increases, i.e. generates and produces. Некто, кто создает или производит. Вероятно это же означает «увеличивать», т.е. генерировать и производить.
