author – автор, создатель, творец; authority – авторитет, влияние, власть, отдел, управление и пр.

author (n.) (отец, из старофранцузского «auctor» (acteor) – автор, создатель, зачинщик (instigator – в основе русское «стегать, подстегивать»); из лат. «auctorem» (auctor) – увеличитель, основатель, хозяин (мастер), лидер). Литературное – тот, кто обеспечивает рост.

c.1300, autor "father," from Old French auctor, acteor "author, originator, creator, instigator (12c., Modern French auteur), from Latin auctorem (nominative auctor) "enlarger, founder, master, leader," literally "one who causes to grow," agent noun from auctus, past participle of augere "to increase" (see augment). Meaning "one who sets forth written statements" is from late 14c. The -t- changed to -th- 16c. on mistaken assumption of Greek origin.

Причастие прошедшего времени от «augere» - расти.

augment (v.)
c.1400, from Old French augmenter "increase, enhance" (14c.), from Late Latin augmentare "to increase," from Latin augmentum "an increase," from augere "to increase, make big, enlarge, enrich," from PIE root *aug- "to increase" (cf. Sanskrit ojas- "strength;" Lithuanian augu "to grow," aukstas "high, of superior rank;" Greek auxo "increase," auxein "to increase;" Gothic aukan "to grow, increase;" Old English eacien "to increase"). Related: Augmented; augmenting. As a noun from early 15c.

authority (n.)
early 13c., autorite "book or quotation that settles an argument," from Old French auctorité "authority, prestige, right, permission, dignity, gravity; the Scriptures" (12c.; Modern French autorité), from Latin auctoritatem (nominative auctoritas) "invention, advice, opinion, influence, command," from auctor "master, leader, author" (see author (n.)).

См. «auction»

Но есть и другая версия, она мне кажется более правдоподобной. Русское слово «творец».
1675:
AUTHOR – (Auteur, F. of Auctor, L. i.e. qui auget) the first Cause of a Thing; the Inventor; Contriver or Maker of it; the Writer of a book; the head of a Party or Faction.
