Просто удивительно, как русское «пытать», «попытка», «пытал», «пытался» превратилось в «полет». И причем здесь «перо» и «полет»? Если только замена «р» - «л», тогда «переть» = «полет», но к нашему слову это отношение не имеет.

Более того, скорее всего «compete» никак не связано с «petition», которое, действительно от слова «пытать».
Обратите внимание на значение латинского слова «competere» - идти вместе. Т.е. это слово «со» + «путь». Или грамотнее «спутник», «попутчик».
Так же «пята».

Хотя, может быть и испытание, испытать, испытал.
