lemon (n.1)
type of citrus fruit, c.1400, lymon, from O.Fr. limon "citrus fruit" (12c.), via Provençal or Italian from Arabic laimun, from Pers. limu(n), generic terms for citrus fruits (cf. lime (n.2)); cognate with Skt. nimbu "the lime." Slang meaning "a Quaalude" is 1960s, from Lemmon, name of a pharmaceutical company that once manufactured the drug.

lime (n.1)
"chalky mineral used in making mortar," from O.E. lim "sticky substance, birdlime, mortar, cement, gluten," from P.Gmc. *leimaz (cf. O.S., O.N., Dan. lim, Du. lijm, Ger. Leim "birdlime"), from PIE root *(s)lei- "slime, slimy, sticky" (cf. L. limus "slime, mud, mire," linere "to smear;" see slime (n.)). Lime is made by putting limestone or shells in a red heat, which burns off the carbonic acid and leaves a brittle white solid which dissolves easily in water. Hence lime-kiln (late 13c.), lime-burner (early 14c.). As a verb, c.1200, from the noun.
lime (n.2)
greenish-yellow citrus fruit, 1630s, probably via Sp. lima, from Arabic limah "citrus fruit," from Pers. limun "lemon" (see lemon (n.1)). Related: Limeade (1892), with ending as in lemonade.
lime (n.3)
"linden tree," 1620s, earlier line (c.1500), from M.E. lynde (early 14c.), from O.E. lind "lime tree" (see linden). Klein suggests the change of -n- to -m- probably began in compounds whose second element began in a labial (e.g. line-bark, line-bast). An ornamental European tree unrelated to the tree that produces the citrus fruit.
linden (n.)
"the lime tree," 1570s, noun use of an adjective, "of linden wood," from Old English lind "linden" (n.), from P.Gmc. *lindjo (cf. Old Saxon linda, Old Norse lind, Old High German linta, German linde), probably from PIE *lent-o- "flexible" (see lithe); with reference to the tree's pliant bast. Cf. Russian lutĭijó "forest of lime trees,"(где же они такое слово «надыбали?), Polish łét "switch, twig," Lithuanian lenta "board, plank."
Let me go.
million (n.)
late 14c., from O.Fr. million (late 13c.), from It. millione (now milione), lit. "a great thousand," augmentative of mille "thousand," from L. mille, which is of uncertain origin. Used mainly by mathematicians until 16c. India, with its love of large numbers, had names before 3c. for numbers well beyond a billion. The ancient Greeks had no name for a number greater than ten thousand, the Romans for none higher than a hundred thousand. "A million" in Latin would have been decies centena milia, lit. "ten hundred thousand." Million to one as a type of "long odds" is attested from 1761. Related: Millions.
