Gibbons are apes in the family Hylobatidae (pron.: /ˌhaɪlɵˈbeɪtɨdiː/). The family historically contained one genus, but now is split into four genera. Gibbons occur in tropical and subtropical rainforests from northeast India to Indonesia and north to southern China, including the islands of Sumatra, Borneo, and Java.

GIBBET (gibet, F.) – вид виселицы (в виде буквы «Г») в отличии от римской виселицы в виде буквы «Т».
N.B. Видимо буква «г» отнюдь не случайна – прообраз, как и у «G» абсолютно ясный – горб, гора. Кстати, взгляните на фото гиббона в сидячем положениии.

Нет такого слова у Дворецкого, все это «смешные фантазии». Житель деревьев - arborum residentes. А вот если читать нормально – замены «г» - «h» и «р» - «L», то выглядеть это будет так: ГОРБАТЫЙ – ГРБТ – GRBT – HLBT.

Соответственно, Гилберт – горбун, Гиббон – Горбунков (Семен Семеныч).
