Tools for Constructing Chronologies: crossing disciplinary boundaries
(proceedings published by Springer-Verlag in December 2003 - further details and order form here)

Gregynog Hall, Newtown Powys, Wales, UK
April 3-6 2002
An interdisciplinary workshop sponsored by: The Natural Environment Research Council, English Heritage and The Wenner-Gren Foundation.
Basic Information
This workshop will bring together researchers from a range of disciplines (such as archaeology, earth sciences, statistics, biosciences, chronometry and physics) all with a shared interest in using formal methods for constructing chronologies. Attendance is by invitation only, and each speaker will prepare a paper for circulation to the other delegates a month before the meeting takes place. At the workshop, the oral presentation of papers will be complemented by discussions led by appropriate specialist discussants.
By meeting in this way, we hope to learn from each other's experiences and to facilitate the sharing of resources and the fostering of interdisciplinary collaboration. The meeting is sponsored by the UK's Natural Environment Research Council, English Heritage and The Wenner-Gren Foundation, and will lead to the publication of an edited volume of papers and discussions.

Administrative details
Publication of papers
It is a condition of our funding that we produce an edited collection of papers from this meeting and it is our intention that all papers will be refereed. To facilitate refereeing, editing and completion of the final volume by the end of 2002, we will have to set a tight schedule of deadlines as follows.

Date Deadline

22 February 2002 Submission of full text of papers for pre-workshop circulation
3 May 2002 Submission of full papers revised in the light of workshop discussion
12 July 2002 Deadline for referees reports
30 August 2002 Deadline for resubmission of papers in the light of referees' comments

Travel
As a result of financial support from the Natural Environment Research Council (UK), English Heritage (UK) and the Wenner-Gren Foundation (USA), we are able to offer all delegates a contribution towards the cost of travel to the meeting. We ask that you book your travel as soon as possible and take advantage of any Apex or advance booking fare reductions. Most delegates will arrive by train (we do not have sufficient funds to pay the usual mileage rates for travel by car, but could cover petrol costs if necessary). The nearest station is at Newtown, Powys (see the Gregynog Hall WWW site for more information). If you let us know which train you will be on, we will arrange for you to be met at Newtown station.
For those of you flying into the UK, the nearest international airport is Birmingham.

Reimbursement of travel costs
Once you have a receipt for your travel, the University of Sheffield will reimburse costs in advance of making claims from NERC and EH. You will need a University of Sheffield expenses claim form. Just print off the page and complete it by hand, assuming that we will pay you by cheque (rather than direct to your account). We can accommodate claims in UK pounds, Euros and US dollars - other currencies incur overhead costs that we would like to try to avoid. Please be sure to send the originals of your receipts with the claim, but keep copies of everything you send to us in case of administrative problems. Send all claims to Caitlin Buck at the address above.
