cloud – облако

cloud (n.) (староанглийское «clud» - громада скалы, горы); имеет отношение к комок, сгусток, земля;
Old English clud "mass of rock, hill," related to clod. Metaphoric extension to "raincloud, mass of evaporated water in the sky" is attested by c.1200 based on similarity of cumulus clouds and rock masses. The usual Old English word for "cloud" was weolcan. In Middle English, skie also originally meant "cloud."

The four fundamental types of cloud classification (cirrus, cumulus, stratus, nimbus) were proposed by British amateur meteorologist Luke Howard (1772-1864) in 1802. Figuratively, as something that casts a shadow, from early 15c.; hence under a cloud (c.1500). In the clouds "removed from earthly things; obscure, fanciful, unreal" is from 1640s. Cloud-compeller translates (poetically) Greek nephelegereta, a Homeric epithet of Zeus.

clod (n.) (кусок земли или глина)
"lump of earth or clay," Old English clod- (in clodhamer "the fieldfare," a kind of thrush, literally "field-goer"), from Proto-Germanic *kludda-, from PIE *gleu- (see clay).

Это русское «клуб», «клубок», «клубень», «глыба». Восходит к корню «кл» - круг, Солнце. Замена «б» - «d».

Классификация облаков:
1). Cirrus – перистые облака.
1828:
CIRRUS, “a lock of curl of hair”; also, the tuft of feathers or crest on the heads of certain birds: also, a fringe or border at the end garments”. From “κίρος”. Cirrus, a knot of hair. Завиток волос, локон; пучок или плюмаж на голове (узелок учительницы) некоторых птиц.
Т.е. «перистые облака» - это «волосы», т.е. «херъ». Равное «кол» = прямая. Так же «клок» - завиток.

2) cumulus – кучевые облака

CUMULUS, a heap (куча, от «копить»); т.е. «ком».

3) stratus – слоистые облака. Это русское «стлать» (стелить) с заменой «л» - «r». Так же «слой». Стелить – СТЛТ – STLT – STRT – stratus. Сюда же – «страт», как «класс» общество. Стратификация (в геологии – размещение пород, согласно их возрасту; деление общества на слои и пр.)

Ну, и какое отношение имеет слово «карябаю», «царапаю» к расслаиванию?

4) nimbus – кучево-дождевые облака.

Nimbus, from “νέθος”, a cloud. Просто «небо». Но и «нить».
