Although it is rare in South Asia, some populations show relatively high percentages for R1b. These include Lambadi (Andhra Pradesh) showing 37%,<24>and Agharia (East India) at 30%.<25> Besides these, R1b has appeared in Chenchu (2%), Makrani (5%), Newars (Nepal) (10.6%), Pallan (3.5%), , Punjabi (7.6%) and West Bengalis (6.5%).
In the book, “The Tribes and Castes of the Central Provinces of India, Volume II by R. V. Russell (1873-1915)”, the author mentions that the Agharias claim to be Somvansi Rajputs, a claim which Colonel Dalton (of British Empire) had said their appearance favours- “Tall, well-made, with high Aryan features and tawny complexions, they look like Rajputs, though they are more industrious and intelligent than the generality of the fighting tribe.”
