Marko Martinović gives nautical training to Russian ‘boyars’ (noblemen)
This painting has a great documentary value, especially because of the text contained in its upper part. The text makes reference of the Russian ‘boyars’ (noblemen), who were sent to Venice by the Russian Emperor Peter the Great to learn navigation. Captain Marko Martinović was appointed by the Senate of Venice to give them nautical instructions. In 1698, they spent some time in Perast, where they underwent additional training.
Marko Martinović (1663-1716), who was a captain, a merchant and a writer, gave invaluable contribution, as a naval expert and pedagogue, to the first organized form of maritime education in our area. This ranks him among the most important persons who contributed to the fame of seafaring in the Bay of Boka Kotorska.
