Albrecht ALTDORFER
The Resurrection of Christ c. 1516 Oil on wood, 70,5 x 37,3 cm Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna
Sandro BOTTICELLI
rucifixion c. 1497 Tempera on canvas, 73,5 x 50,8 cm Fogg Art Museum, Inuversity of Harvard, Cambridge
http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/gb-eng.html
"The question of the correct flag to fly from a flag staff on an English church was raised in February 1907, when Sir A.Scott-Gatty, Garter King of Arms, wrote that, "churches should not fly the national flag. It should be the cross of St. George impaling the arms of the See (arms in the hoist and cross in the fly ?), but until the sovereign has spoken on this matter by a Royal Warrant, there is no flag that can be flown with propriety."
The matter came up again after the coronation of George VI when according to a letter published in The Times newspaper on 18 January 1938; "Herald's College referred to this in 1911 at Coronation of George V. Cross of St George impaled with the arms of the diocese is the flag." A note in the file added that the flag did not exist and that the plain St.George's Flag was correct.
Later in 1938 the Earl Marshall issued a warrant declaring the proper flag on churches to be St George's cross with the arms of the See in the canton." ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 2.
http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/ge.html
"The first mention of the five-cross design dates back to the middle of the 14th century, when... an unknown Franciscan monk wrote that the kingdom's flag was "a white-colored cloth with five red crosses." In prior centuries, Georgian kings had marched into battle brandishing a simpler flag, similar to the "St. George's cross" <...>, a single red cross, on a white background...
...Around 1225 Patriarch Jacques de Vitry of Jerusalem wrote: "... These men are called Georgians, because they especially revere and worship St. George, whom they make their patron and standard-bearer in their fight with the infidels, and they honour him above all saints. Whenever they come on pilgrimage to the Lord's Sepulchre, they march into the Holy City with banners displayed ..."

http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/it-genoa.html
"Flags in Italy under Napoleon's pressure" at ICV 20 in Stockholm, reported about the Republic of Liguria: It replaced the Republic of Genoa in 1797 but kept its flag of red St. George cross on white."
http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/it_lig.html
http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/gr.html#his
The flag used at sea and on the coast had nine horizontal stripes, alternatively blue and white, and a white cross on a blue square field in canton. This flag is today the Greek national flag.
From June 1975 until December 1978 the plain cross flag was used as the only national flag. The situation is now reversed, and the striped flag is now the only official national flag, although the cross flag can still be seen in unofficial use.
Captioned: #142. Greece. Blue field with a decentered white cross and arms in the 'middle' of the cross. The arms look like a Bavarian lozengy shield with a crown. These arms are logical because the Oldenburg dynasty replaced the Wittelsbach one in 1862, the year Colton's work was published.
A white flag with a blue cross is known to have been used by forces connected with the Kolokotronis family, as well as the Cypriot forces of Hadjigeorgios. It was also used by the forces of Mellissinos Makarios after (perhaps during) the 1769 revolution. This probably does not exhaust its usage. As such, it was perhaps the most widely used Greek revolutionary flag. Nevertheless, a different national flag was adopted by the provisional government. http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/gr_indep.html
The flag used by Nikitaras, from his real name Nikitas Stamelopoulos (1782-1849) is shown in the National History Museum in Athens.

Hydra
Spetsai
