-Latin: Hieromices -The Greek is sometimes given as Ancient Greek: Ἱερομύαξ, Hieromyax, or Ancient Greek: Ιερμουχάς,Iermouchas.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Yarmouk#Byzantine_army ...Muslim sources mention that the army of Gregory had used chains to link together its foot-soldiers, who had all taken an oath of death. The chains were in 10-man lengths and were used as a proof of unshakeable courage on the part of the men, who thus displayed their willingness to die where they stood and never retreat. The chains also acted as an insurance against a breakthrough by enemy cavalry...
...The Byzantines retreated west towards Wadi-ur-Ruqqad where there was a bridge at Ayn al Dhakar for safe crossing across the deep gorges of the ravines of Wadi-ur-Ruqqad.. The Byzantines were surrounded from all sides now.<76>k<›> Some fell into the deep ravines off the steep slopes, others tried to escape in the waters, only to be smashed on the rocks below and again others were killed in their flight...
http://www.allempires.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=32251 the 20th of August 636- Battle of Yarmuk - History Forum ~ All Empires ...According to Muslim accounts, a strong south wind blew clouds of dust into the Christians' faces, and the soldiers wilted under the heat of the August sun. Despite this, Khalid was at first pushed back, but although his army was only about half the size of the Byzantine force, it was more unified than the multinational Imperial Army which contained Armenians, Slavs and Ghassanids as well as regular Byzantine troops. Eventually renewed Muslim counter-attacks broke through the Byzantine lines, and a rout ensued. Most of Baänes men were either encircled and massacred, or driven to their deaths over a steep ravine. As a result of this, all of Syria lay open to the Muslim Arabs. Damascus was recaptured by the Muslims within a month, and Jerusalem fell shortly after.
http://www.grandestrategy.com/2007/12/sword-of-allah-chapter-35-yarmuk.html ...The statement made by some later Western writers that the Roman defeat was due to Khalid's exploitation of a violent sand storm which blew in the faces of the Romans is utterly incorrect. No Muslim historian has mentioned such a storm. Gibbon (Vol. 5, p. 327) states that there was "a cloud of dust and adverse wind",
Yarmouk was a decisive battle in the Islamic history. The Arab historian, Al Tabari, stated "There was never a battle as that of Yarmouk".
...Another excuse was bad weather conditions. Theophanes (perhaps following his source material) pointed them out particularly in his description of the first Byzantine failures, as early as in Syria. In Chronography one can find the following comment on the battle of Yarmuk: And as a south wind was blowing in the direction of the Romans, they could not face the enemy on account of the dust and were defeated35. It is hard to say whether the wind was in reality a decisive factor in this battle36. However, the fact that Theophanes stressed this detail is worth noticing37. 37 Especially as it has no equivalent passage in Agapius, Michael the Syrian or Chronicle of 1234, cf. R.G. Hoyland, op. cit., p. 100–103. (Islam, the Arabs and Umayyad Rulers According to Theophanes the Confessor’s Chronography автор: B Cecota)
