Этимология – происходит из «вульгарной» (на самом деле «вольный говор» - vul + gar) или «народной» латыни. От слова «retundus», которое, в свою очередь от латинского «rotundus» - в форме колеса, круга. Это слово имеет отношение к слову «rota» - колесо.
На самом деле – в основе корень «вр» - вращать, врать, ворот, ворота, воротить. Дверь, двор. Да, кстати, военное слово «рота» к этому делу никакого отношения не имеет. В основе корень «рд» - орда, род, ряд.
