important (adj.) (из среднефранцузского «important»); из среднелатинского «importantem» (именительный падеж – «importans»); причастие настоящего времени от «importare» - быть значительным; из латинского «importare» - привносить, вносить в. mid-15c., from Middle French important and directly from Medieval Latin importantem (nominative importans), present participle of importare "be significant in," from Latin importare "bring in" (see import). Related: Importantly.
import (v.) (передать информацию, выразить, сделать известным, обозначить); из латинского «importare» - донести, привнести, передать; из «in-» - в + «portare» - нести early 15c., "convey information, express, make known, signify," from Latin importare "bring in, convey," from assimilated form of in- "into, in" (see in- (2)) + portare "to carry" (see port (n.1)). Sense of "bring in goods from abroad" first recorded c.1500. Related: Imported; importing.
port (n.1) (гавань, порт); староанглийское «port»; из старофранцузского «port» - гавань, порт, горный проход; из латинского «portus» - порт, гавань; дословно – вход, проход, фигурально – убежище; из PIE *prtu- проходить, проход; из корня *per- (2) – вести, проходить "harbor," Old English port "harbor, haven," reinforced by Old French port "harbor, port; mountain pass;" Old English and Old French words both from Latin portus "port, harbor," originally "entrance, passage," figuratively "place of refuge, assylum," from PIE *prtu- "a going, a passage," from root *per- (2) "to lead, pass over" (cognates: Sanskrit parayati "carries over;" Greek poros "journey, passage, way," peirein "to pierce, run through;" Latin porta "gate, door," portare "passage," peritus "experienced;" Avestan peretush "passage, ford, bridge;" Armenian hordan "go forward;" Welsh rhyd "ford;" Old Church Slavonic pariti "to fly;" Old English faran "to go, journey," Old Norse fjörðr "inlet, estuary").
Meaning "left side of a ship" (looking forward from the stern) is attested from 1540s, from notion of "the side facing the harbor" (when a ship is docked). It replaced larboard in common usage to avoid confusion with starboard; officially so by Admiralty order of 1844 and U.S. Navy Department notice of 1846. Figurative sense "place of refuge" is attested from early 15c.; phrase any port in a storm first recorded 1749. A port of call (1810) is one paid a scheduled visit by a ship.
port (n.2) (ворота); староанглийское «port» - портал, дверь, ворота, вход; из старофранцузского «porte» - ворота, вход; из латинского «porta» - городские ворота, ворота, дверь, вход; из PIE корня *per- "gateway," Old English port "portal, door, gate, entrance," from Old French porte "gate, entrance," from Latin porta "city gate, gate; door, entrance," from PIE root *per- (see port (n.1)). Specific meaning "porthole, opening in the side of a ship" is attested from c.1300.
port (n.3) (осанка, поведение, манера держаться, опора, вид, внешность); из старофранцузского «port»; из «porter» - нести; из латинского «portare» - нести "bearing, mien," c.1300, from Old French port, from porter "to carry," from Latin portare (see port (n.1)).
«fjord») – PHRT – PRT – portus fjord (n.) 1670s, from Norwegian fiord, from Old Norse fjörðr, from North Germanic *ferthuz, from PIE *prtus, from *per- "going, passage" (see port (n.1)).
The country is named after its second largest city, Porto, whose name derives from Latin "Portus" and the Celtic place-name "Cale".<12>
The etymology of the name Cale is mysterious, as is the identity of the town's founders. Some historians have argued that Greeks were the first to settle Cale and that the name derives from the Greek word kallis (καλλι` , 'beautiful', referring to the beauty of the Douro valley. Still others have claimed that Cale originated in the language of the Gallaeci people indigenous to the surrounding region (see below). Others argue that Cale<2> is a Celtic name like many others found in the region. The word cale or cala, would mean 'port', an 'inlet' or 'harbour,' and implied the existence of an older Celtic harbour.<3> Others argue it is the stem of Gallaecia. Another theory claims it derives from Caladunum.<4> In any case, the Portu part of the name Portucale became Porto, the modern name for the city located on the site of the ancient city of Cale at the mouth of the Douro River. And Port became the name in English of the wine from the Douro Valley region around Porto. The name Cale is today reflected in Gaia (Vila Nova de Gaia), a city on the left bank of the river.
gulf (n.) (чрезвычайно глубокое место); из старофранцузского «golf» - залив, водоворот; из итальянского «golfo» - залив, бухта; из позднелатинского «colfos»; из греческого «κόλπος» - бухта, залив, ранее – через волны, сверток одежды; дословно – грудь, в общем смысле – нечто изогнутое; из PIE *kwelp- выгибать дугой, изгибаться. late 14c., "profound depth;" geographic sense is c.1400; from Old French golf "a gulf, whirlpool," from Italian golfo "a gulf, a bay," from Late Latin colfos, from Greek kolpos "bay, gulf," earlier "trough between waves, fold of a garment," originally "bosom," the common notion being "curved shape," from PIE *kwelp- "to arch, to vault" (compare Old English hwealf, a-hwielfan "to overwhelm"). Latin sinus underwent the same development, being used first for "bosom," later for "gulf." Replaced Old English sæ-earm. Figurative sense of "a wide interval" is from 1550s. The Gulf Stream (1775) takes its name from the Gulf of Mexico. From French golfe, from Italian golfo, from Late Latin colfos, from Ancient Greek κόλπος (kólpos).
е. ГЛБ – замена «б» - «f». GLB – GLF.
CLB – GLB – GLF – gulf.
«geometry».
