India ink and pencil on paper, 30.5 x 43 cm.
In the glassy eyes of an observant bobcat, figures glisten in the moonlight. The cat stares intently ahead, musing on its observers. Its deep, hypnotic pupils evoke many thoughts far beyond the realm of numbers. One should think of this cat as Begemot, the companion of Woland, a hero in Bulgakov's novel The Master and Margarita. Although this image refers to no mathematical theme in particular, the nature of the lines and the composition does call forth mathematical ideas, especially the notion of harmony and balance in form.
