Исходная форма *smerk- и *smьrk-, неясного происхождения. Считают родственным арм. mair "кедр, пиния, ель" (Бругман, Grdr. 1, 741; Хюбшман, IFAnz. 10, 48; Преобр. II, 335). Кроме того, предполагали еще связь с лит. smarsas "жир, мазь", smarstvas – то же, др.-исл. smjo<r ср. р. "масло (сливочное), жир", д.-в.-н. smero – то же, нов.-в.-н. schmieren "намазывать" и Schmarren (Младенов 595) или родство со смерде́ть, т. е. якобы первонач. Поможем Фасмеру – кедр имеет коричнево-красную кору, это просто обратное прочтение слова «красный».
