spy – шпион, разведчик, наблюдатель, шпик; заниматься шпионажем, следить, см. «special», «spite»
spy (v.) (внимательно наблюдать); из старофранцузского «espier» - наблюдать, шпионить; из франкского *spehon; из протогерманского *spehon-; из PIE корня *spek- смотреть, наблюдать mid-13c., "to watch stealthily," from Old French espiier "observe, watch closely, spy on, find out," probably from Frankish *spehon or some other Germanic source, from Proto-Germanic *spehon- (cognates: Old High German *spehon "to look out for, scout, spy," German spähen "to spy," Middle Dutch spien), the Germanic survivals of the productive PIE root *spek- "to look, observe" (see scope (n.1)). Old English had spyrian "make a track, go, pursue; ask about, investigate," also a noun spyrigend "investigator, inquirer." Italian spiare, Spanish espiar also are Germanic loan-words. Meaning "to catch sight of" is from c. 1300.
1675: To SPY (spier, F., spoyder, Dan., Spyran, Sax.) – наблюдать, рыскать глазами A SPY (espion, F.) – тот, кто наблюдает, особенно наблюдатель в армии
1826: SPY, v., a. – смотреть, открывать, проверять; Swed. “speja, spea”; B. “spieden, spien”; T. “spahen”; L. “speciare”; It. “spiare”; F. “espier, epier”; Sp. “espiare”; Arm. “spio”; W. “yspio” – из скифского “spu”, σπύ – глаз.
Т.е. прямым текстом – «зрю», «узрю» (зрак, взор, зоркий); греческого слова я не нашел. Зрю, зрак, зреть, узрел (не даром же Любоцкий выделяет слово «спеть» = «зреть», см. «spite», но до того, что просто «р» = «р» он не дошел. ЗР (К) (Т) (Л) – SP (H, C) , (T = D), (Л = R).
